Article: The Life of a Shearling Coat
The Life of a Shearling Coat
There is a moment, long before a shearling coat is sketched or cut, where its story begins.
Not in the studio, but in the material itself.
At Gushlow & Cole, every piece starts with shearling, not as a fabric, but as a foundation for every shearling coat we design and make in England.
It dictates everything that follows. The weight, the drape, the silhouette, even the attitude of the shearling coat. No two types of texture are ever quite the same, and it is in understanding these nuances that the design process truly begins.
The Material: What Is Shearling?
Shearling is a lambskin, it is natural, a byproduct, and a highly sought-after, luxurious material.
It is a single material, where the suede leather and wool remain naturally connected. The skin is tanned with the wool intact, creating balance of structure and softness that cannot be replicated by combining separate layers. This is what gives shearling its unique character - insulating, breathable, and responsive to the wearer.
Shearling is not simply about style or warmth, but about balance, softness and structure. A velvety, lightweight Merino behaves entirely differently to a curly, long-wool Toscana. A Nappa Leather finish brings structure, a soft suede gives fluidity, seen in our Blanket Shawl Coat. Some invite clean, architectural lines; others, call for volume and movement,
Rather than forcing a design onto the material, we work with it.
We let it lead.
The Design
Our process begins by draping, not on paper. All decisions are guided by how the material naturally wants to fall.
Starting from a block that best suits the weight and character of the shearling, we drape directly onto the body, focusing first on feel. This allows us to shape in three dimensions, proportion and volume. A sleeve may become more generous, a body slightly cocooned, a collar exaggerated.
Details come later.
Always later.
This approach creates pieces that feel instinctive rather than overworked. There is a quiet ease to them, a sense that they have found their correct shape.
The Development
Before a design is fully realised, it is developed through experience. Years of specialising and working together have given Emma and I an intrinsic understanding of how a garment must be constructed and brought to life. On average, three samples are made to refine proportion, fit, and make. Sometimes, the first sample is close; more often, it isn't. It is a process of quiet adjustment, guided by instinct as much as technique.
The Making
Each coat is crafted in our workshop in England, in small quantities, by skilled makers who understand the precision required to work with shearling. Unlike many other materials, it cannot simply be unpicked and redone without consequence.
Every cut matters.
This level of care is slower by nature; it’s intentional, ensuring each piece retains its integrity in both construction and design.
The Wearing
A shearling coat does not belong to a single season.
It becomes part of life.
A piece to look forward to wearing.
Thrown over light layers on a cool autumn or spring morning, worn open as the temperature shifts, or wrapped close in the depth of winter.
Over time, it softens, moulds, and develops its own character, shaped by the person who wears it.
It is not something to be replaced. It is something to be lived in, not kept for special occasions, yet it feels special on every wear.
The Longevity
In a time of constant newness, we believe in permanence.
A well-made shearling coat can last for decades. Not just physically, but aesthetically. By focusing on proportion, material, and restraint rather than trend, each piece is designed to remain relevant and return to season after season.
This is what gives it value.
Not just how it looks when it is new, but how it endures.
At Gushlow & Cole, a shearling coat is never just a product. It is a process, a material, and a relationship, evolving over time, and becoming more personal with every wear.
The Heirloom
Gushlow & Cole is born of heritage, shaped through discovering and wearing the special pieces my Father made for my Mother. By understanding, over time, the lasting value of well-designed, well-made shearling. This experience defines our approach: considered design, expert making, and consistent quality. It’s what Gushlow & Cole stands for, and what we pass on to you.
